2019 Summer Academy

The Summer Academy program at Charter Arts is open to the public and offers options for kids and teens.  Some programs are taught by Charter Arts’ acclaimed faculty and some are taught by visiting artists.  Come join us for some great training and great fun all wrapped into one.  Also, for any current or incoming Charter Arts student,  this program is a fun way to keep your skills sharp over the summer or to meet other young artists from the community.

Early drop-off is available for all programs from 8 AM-9 AM, but all participants must be picked up at the workshop end time. 


Musical Theatre Intensive

Two-week session:  July 15-19 and July 22-26

9 AM- 3 PM daily

Fee:  Early registration is $395 by March 25, 2019.  Registration after March 25 is $425

This two-week camp is open to children entering 6th-8th grade (5th grade may be considered on an individual basis).  Hone your musical theatre skills with this two-week, full-day camp specifically designed for the young actor/performer.  This unique hands-on environment provides musical theatre students a chance to improve in all areas: acting, voice, choreography basics for musical theatre, audition and performance skills.  **This workshop is open to all levels, but some experience is recommended. This workshop is not ideal for a child who has never performed for others. (The Acting 101 Workshop may be a better option for the beginning actor).  A ‘meet the instructor’ session will be held prior to workshop start so instructors can assess each child’s level in order to select material.  This will be scheduled either in person or through video submission.

WEEK ONE – Audition Basics:  Learn how to select and perfect the right audition song, practice cold reading, learn dance audition basics, get lessons in confidence and workshop an audition monologue.   This first week will end with a mock audition in front of a professional panel.

WEEK TWO – Showcase Performance Prep:  Take what you learned in Week One and create a musical theatre showcase!  Continue to work on your solo to get it performance ready and learn how to perform with a duet partner and/or small group numbers.  This second week will end with a showcase performance for your family and friends.


Lights, Sound, Action- Theatre Tech Workshop

One Week Session:  July 22-26

9:00 AM- 3:00 PM daily

Fee:  $225

This workshop is ideal for the child who enjoys the design and technical aspects of a stage production.  Participants will design a set, build props, and learn the basics of sound and lighting design.  Open to children entering 6-8th grades.


Teen Theatre Intensive  Workshop

One Week Session: July 15-19

9:30am-12:00 pm daily

Fee: $175

For the younger teen actor who wants to push his or her acting to the next level, this workshop will be jam-packed with exercises that will fine tune the actor’s individual style.  This workshop will also include some writing as well.  This workshop is taught by Christopher Morris, a beloved member of the Charter Arts theatre faculty.  Beginner-Intermediate


Shakespeare Intensive Workshop

One Week Session:  July 22-26

9:00 am- 12:00 pm daily

Fee:  $175

“To be or not to be…”—This workshop will challenge the teen actor with all that is Shakespeare- from fundamentals to performing soliloquies.  Certainly, a MUST HAVE skill set in every actor’s arsenal of training and an important resume builder.   Open to teens entering 8th-12th grades.


Literary Arts Summer Workshop: An Introduction to Character Development and Fiction Writing

One Week Session: July 22-26

9:00 AM- 12:00 PM daily

Fee:  $175

Join us for an introductory exploration of character development and fiction writing taught by Paul Walsh, the Artistic Director of the Literary Arts at Charter Arts. Students will engage with a variety of character exercises that will aid them in creating fleshed-out and well-rounded characters. Students will also focus on other aspects of fictional writing including but not limited to setting, point of view, metaphor, and symbolism. Students will utilize this new knowledge to create pieces of original fiction throughout the course of the week.  Open to children entering 7th– 9th grades. (6th grade may be considered)


Fun with Art:  Painting & Drawing 101

One Week Session:  July 15-19

9:00 AM- 3:00 PM

½ day option 9:00 AM-12:00 PM – Drawing  ($165 for the week, includes materials)

Full day option: 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM- Drawing & Painting ($245 for the week, includes materials)

This workshop is designed for the novice young artist who is interested in learning the basics of drawing and painting.  Participants will spend a portion of the day working in each medium. Open to children entering 5th-7th grades.


Fun with Science:  Environmental Camp

One Week Session:  July 15-19

9:00 AM-12:00 PM daily

Fee:  $165

Enjoy a week of explorations in this camp focused on the wonders of environmental science.  Participants will experience a new exploration each day, which will highlight a specific environmentally- conscience topic, including single-use plastics, aquatic eco-systems, and more!  Open to children entering 5th-7th grades.


Introduction to Film and Screenwriting

One Week Session: July 15-19

9:00 AM- 12:00 PM daily

Fee: $175

This workshop is an entryway into the “reading” and comprehension of film as a language. Participants will explore the language of film and how film communicates. Participants will spend time looking carefully at how films are constructed through elements such as lighting, sound, movement, and performance, and how specific filmmaking techniques create specific audience responses. Along with examining popular screenplays, this experience offers chances to create original scenes and storyboards. Introduction to Film and Screenwriting gives beginning students the opportunity to think about, talk about, and write about film.  Taught by Charter Arts Literary Arts faculty member, Heath Mensher. Open to children entering 7th– 9th grades.


Acting 101

One Week Session:  July 22-26

9:00 AM-3:00 PM daily

Fee:  $245

This workshop is open to children entering 6th-8th grades (5th grade may be considered on an individual basis).  This session will be a fun exploration of the basics of acting, including improvisation and character development.  Participants will learn how to express themselves in front of an audience when they perform a short showcase for parents at the end of the session.


Pop & Jazz Vocal Workshop

One Week Session:  July 29-August 2 (open to teens entering 8th-12th grades)

9:00 AM-12:00 PM daily.

FEE:  $195

So you want to perform like a Pop Star or Jazz Singer?  This program, taught by Chet Brown is designed to give vocal students a major edge in all areas of performing in front of an audience.  Each student will develop their music skills through coaching and ensemble work.  Participants will create a one-hour show to be performed at Musikfest (date tbd- the date will take place the week after the workshop)  Open to teens entering 8th-12th grades.


Acting for Commercial, TV and Film Workshop

July 29-August 2 (open to teens entering 8th-12th grades)

9 AM-12 PM daily

Fee: $195

This workshop is taught by an industry professional with more than twenty years experience working in casting and as a producer on over 600 commercial, tv and film projects.  Participants will learn how the on-camera acting industry really works, both regionally and in the larger markets of New York and Los Angeles.  Participants will learn critical ‘cold read’ techniques required when auditioning for commercial, tv and film projects.  Limited to 8 participants.  Open to teens entering 8th-12th grades.


Opera and Classical Voice Workshop

One Week Session:  July 22-26

9:00 AM-12:00 PM daily

Fee: $195

Opera and classical music are more popular than ever with children and teens.  From acts like Laura Bretan and Italian teen opera trio, Il Volo, classical voice is making an impact on all ages.  This workshop is for the intermediate to the advanced vocal student, with a developed voice. Not for beginners. Open to teens entering 9th-12th grades.


The Business of Songwriting

Tuesday, August 6th

This one-day seminar will feature a top songwriter/record producer who has over 40 U.S. Top 40 hits.  This seminar will be open to teens and adults.

The program is not affiliated with the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts admissions process.


Registration, Cancellation, and Refund Policy:

  • Full payment is required at time of registration.  Partial payments or payment plans are not available for this program.
  • Students who have registered and who have paid in full for a Summer Academy workshop, who choose to cancel their registration, must notify the Summer Academy Coordinator in writing at communications@charterarts.org.
  • A student who cancels his/her registration more than 14 business days prior to class start date, is eligible for a 100% refund.  A student who cancels his/her registration 5-13 business days prior to class start date will be eligible for a 50% refund.  A student who cancels his/her registration less than 5 business days prior to class start date, will not be eligible for a refund.
  • A student who has registered and paid in full for a workshop, who chooses to terminate his/her participation after the class start date, will not be eligible for a refund but can transfer unused hours toward another workshop in the 2019 Summer Academy based on availability.  This credit must be used during the 2019 Summer Academy Program and cannot be transferred to another program at a later date.

Course Cancellation:

The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts Summer Academy reserves the right to cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment.  If a camp or workshop is canceled, students will be notified in writing, and all registered students who have paid in full will be eligible for a full refund OR students may choose to transfer their registration fee to another course or workshop in the 2018 Summer Academy, The Charter Arts Summer Academy reserves the right to replace a course instructor without notification.
