SUMMARY:Virtual Play Readings
DESCRIPTION:Join the Charter Arts Theatre Department on Friday\, May 22nd at 7pm for its virtual New Play Readings.      Professional actors from Philadelphia\, NYC\, LA and the Lehigh Valley will read a few of the works written by senior theatre students in Playwriting. There will be 3 featured plays (each roughly 10 minutes in length)\, followed by a short talkback/feedback for the benefit of the student writers.     Thanks to Dramaturge\, Shaun Leisher\, for working with our students and coordinating this special event. And thanks also to Mr. Cantelmi who worked with all of our senior theatre majors this year in Playwriting\, encouraging their creativity and developing their skills. . FEATURED PLAYS:    "Man\, Oh Man..." written by Katherine Conlon. When a bitter children's TV host refuses to change with the times\, a young girl is selected to be his new partner. However\, she's not all sugar and spice. This play skewers both sides of the political spectrum\, while looking at what lurks behind the showbiz curtain.        "Couples Therapy\," written by Rylan Foraker. Get a glimpse into the average couples therapy session hosted by leading therapist Elizabeth Gwen. Experience a spectrum of emotions as you watch three of her most interesting couples.        "Celiac Strong\," written by Alexa Rojo. A meeting of the Celiac Strong Organization gets out of hand when some overprotective mothers come to blows. The appearance of a giant bread monster is just what they need to put things into perspective.

DESCRIPTION:CRIMES OF THE HEART written by Beth Henley    In this Pulitzer Prize-winning play filled with southern charm and humor\, the three Magrath sisters are reunited in their home of Hazlehurst\, Mississippi. The youngest\, Babe\, has just shot her husband\, the wealthiest man in town. While the eldest\, Lenny\, copes with loneliness and middle child\, Meg\, tries to rekindle an old flame\, the siblings ultimately discover the love they are searching for lies within the bond they share.    Virtual Reading    Friday\, April 24 at 7 PM    Charter Arts' reading of the play is directed by Katie Conlon and features an exceptional cast! SUMMARY:Theatre: Tapas, Treats & Encore Performance VANISHING POINT
DESCRIPTION:Spend your Saturday night with us! We’ll start out with tapas\, treats\, and music in the Commons Cafe at 6 pm\, and then move into the main theatre at 7 pm for an encore performance of Vanishing Point\, A New Musical. Playwright Rob Hartmann described the production as an “outpouring of love on stage.” The comedy-fantasy centers around the lives of Aviatrix Amelia Earhart\, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson and author Agatha Christie who each vanished mysteriously: Agatha disappeared for eleven days; Aimee disappeared for three weeks\, and of course Amelia vanished completely. The show\, food\, and drinks are included in the ticket price of $20 for adults and $10 for kids/teens; all proceeds benefit theatre programs.    BUY TICKETS

DESCRIPTION:The Misanthrope\, by Moliere.    The Misanthrope not only satirizes the hypocrisies of the French aristocracy\, but also succeeds in pointing out the insincerity in all men. Alceste\, The Misanthrope\, believes that with gossip and deceit all the rage\, he can find no one who will speak the truth. His friend\, Philinte\, assures him that flattery is necessary and gossip should be enjoyed. When Alceste offers an honest opinion about a poem written by the well respected\, Oronto\, he is threatened with a law suit. To make matters worse\, he and Oronto are vying for the affection of the same girl. In the end The Misanthrope decides to retire from society all together. DESCRIPTION:SUMMER AND SMOKE\, by Tennessee Williams. Set in Mississippi at the turn of the century through 1916\, the play centers on Alma\, an anxious\, unmarried minister's daughter\, inexplicably attracted to the wild boy next door. John\, who grows up to become a doctor\, prefers the companionship of Rosa\, who is nothing like the guarded and repressed Alma. When Alma reports John’s immoral behavior to his father\, it leads to tragic consequences. By the play's end\, Alma shares her feelings for John admitting she felt “suffocated in smoke from something on fire inside her\,” but he too has changed\, assuring her that what they had between them was only a “spiritual bond.”   Charter Arts Black Box Theatre   OCTOBER 22\, 23\, 24 & 25 at 7pm and the 26th  at 2pm.    (**Please note there is only one matinee performance on Sunday the 26th\, there is no matinee on Saturday)  Tickets: $6 Charter arts students\, $8 students\, $12 adults. The liberating God of wine and revelry is feared and opposed by Pentheus\, the reigning king of Thebes. When Pentheus spies upon the divine rights of Dionysus and his band of female worshippers\, he meets with a rather gory and shocking end. Dr. Nicholas Rudall’s contemporary translation beautifully maintains the vivid imagery and poetic structure of Euripides’ ancient text. SUMMARY:The Mousetrap
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Christie’s murder mystery\, The Mousetrap\, opened in London in 1952 and has run continuously since then\, making it the longest running play of the modern era. Four guests find themselves snowed in at Monkswell Manor. They come across a newspaper detailing the account of a recent murder in London. The appearance of a strange traveller\, a phone call from the police and the arrival of a detective on skis puts the guests on edge\, but is not until one of them is found dead that they realize the murderer is among them. To set a trap\, they attempt to reenact the murder\, steering the action and the audience toward a famously suspensful end.
